Create A Linux System

Why Linux ?

It's much much better than MS Windows. Faster. More reliable.

Why Fedora Linux ?

We have investigated a few linux distributions and found Fedora best suits our needs.

What's the difference between Fedora and other distributions ?

Not a lot, actually. All are free. All will do the same things. But Fedora comes with the majority of what we need already included. Also, we believe that since Fedora is the free spin-off from business-class Red Hat Linux, it'll be better supported and maintained in the future. That's all.
To read about fedora linux, see the home page http://fedoraproject.org/

Will all Linux software work on Fedora ?

Yes. All linux software will (should) work on all Linux distributions. This is assuming you have a recent copy of Linux, and are trying to install recent software ...

Download Linux for yourself. It's 3.6 Gb, so we don't host it. We recommend downloading it from here.

If you can't or don't want to download it, we can send you a DVD containing it. We will charge a nominal fee of £10 (pay via paypal) to cover our time, materials and postage. Use our contact form (link at bottom of every page) or telephone us on 01548 560915.

Now you can set up your Linux System.

To copy files from your digital camera to Linux, use gtkam.

To view your pictures, and rotate selected pictures, use gqview.

To view your pictures, and convert selected to a different size, use gqview and follow these instructions.

To burn a movie (eg .avi format) to DVD, use DeVeDe. Click here.

Essential Dependencies

Linux, when installed, works out of the box - but you are going to want to install much if not all of the above software. Rather annoyingly, much of the above software requires other stuff to be installed first. This stuff is called 'dependencies'; ie, for the above software to work depends upon these being installed.
The huge advantage of these dependencies is that they are all standard, maintained by experts, available for anyone to use with the source code, and run from the command line. This is actually what gives Linux such a huge flexible advantage.
