Many people end up buying the cheapest available laptop, they're around £ 350 nowadays. Then they are disappointed with their purchase, and upgrading is expensive or even impossible.

Many people believe they ought to buy a branded computer. (eg from HP, Dell or others). Non-experts naturally can't tell the difference between these machines in advance. As with most things that are designed for the mass market, they never suit everybody.
A generic product designed to suit the greatest number of potential customers can never equal a specially designed machine.

Ask yourself; what's under the bonnet of a branded computer, and who's having a free ride in the back seat, monitoring you ?

Branded machines are often supplied with customised versions of MS Windows and other software. These versions quietly monitor you and supply information to target advertisers to you.
They even encourage you to purchase more things to make your new machine run better.
If you buy a branded machine, you are purchasing their own hardware and their own customised versions of MS Windows, with all of their adverts and recommended products, none of which are necessary, and all of which encourage you to spend more money with them.

And then, once you buy any computer, you have to download 100 Microsoft Windows Updates and Patches to fix the bugs and ensure online security.
(Your new computer has to be plugged in to the internet to do this. This is a paradox that causes trouble. The system has to be fixed, to prevent viruses from the internet, but you have to plug it into the internet to find the fix!)
Most un-patched computers pick up a virus within 3 minutes of connecting to the internet. This is from our own personal experience. (See our section on ROUTERS which prevent this problem).

What's the urgency to upgrade very soon ? The answer is simple, and incredibly dull. (Sorry). Technology has moved forward very, very fast in the last 2 years. Hard disk manufacturers have invented a new type of hard disk. It's called a SATA. Your old hard disk is called a PATA. The S stands for Serial, the P stands for Parallel. Parallel used to be faster, because you could send 8 bits of information at the same time. But now, they have made Serial faster than Parallel. It's very clever, actually. But who cares about this ? You should.

SATA and PATA are 100% incompatible, and motherboard manufacturers are NOW stopping making motherboards that have the old-style connections. This is very nasty. Why ?

You can't upgrade slowly. You have to buy new. New motherboard, new disks. When you buy a new machine, you will want to transfer all of your data to your new machine. But without being able to plug in your old hard disk, you are going to have to burn your data onto DVDs, then put the DVDs into your new machine.
Oh, and you won't be able to reuse your old disks. Sorry about that.
